The big leak is still around the base of the plastic fill tube. I have tried to fix this area once with the hi temp RTV stuff. I had a VW mechanic at a dealership tell me that I would never fix this area with RTV because it won't stick to the plastic. Did the dealership have a new filler tube? Nope! So I have to call around for a new filler tube for a 1.6 diesel or find a better material to use for a gasket. The filler tube looks good with no cracks or apparent warp.

The '82 Diesel that I have now (presently in the shop getting a T/D Jetta transplant) was leaking from the same exact places when i took it out of storage (after two years). I leave off the tin also. The Diesel noise is a bit louder without it there, but I didn't like it b/c it was just a place where all kinds of crap got deposited (oil, sticks, leaves, etc.) If you don't mind the extra noise, then go for it.
