Also be sure you have good wires to the starter from the positive side of the
battery, and a good ground. As the diesel starter needs much more oomph than the
gas starter, good electrical connections is just as more important.

I just spent the best part of a sunny Sunday afternoon refurbishing the ground
wire on a 1982 Golf diesel, there were corrosion everywhere.
