Although this gauge advice is meant to be facetious, I find the g-force meter to be quite useful for determining real power developed. Appropriate accelerometers are available from Analog Devices and others. This could be, and is, a serious tuning aid. I have used it to determine the optimal camshaft timing, and the maximum timing advance tolerated in the digifant system (1.8 L 8-V I4). For my system, I am using the Digifant II chip from AMS, so the balance between static timing advance, and retardation from the knock sensor has a significant impact on power. I have also used it to measure the result of AFM adjustment to spring tension and to determine the importance of 89 or 92 octane.

FWIW,

Frank Grunthaner
