Last time I tightened up the spring the entire metal post pulled out of the mirror shaft! Not knowing that the list vendors had new mirrors for $20, I reinserted the pin and drilled through the mirror shaft and through the pin. Then I inserted a nail to pin the post in permanently and patched the hole with a little silicone sealer. This is a permanent fix, and pretty easy, but a shiny new mirror is better.
