Subject: What to do for a seized heater fan?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Hi All,
I've seen a couple of queries about this prob. but no answer yet.
My 82 diesel Vanagon heater fan has ceased moving air as it was designed to
do.
It doesn't seem to be the switch or fuse because when you turn the switch on,
the dash lights seem to dim a bit indicating to me a seized blower motor.
Ive checked the archives re: heater fans but found nothing. Ive poked around
trying in vain to spin the fan blades in an attempt to free them, and I can't
even reach them. I've checked Bently for a procedure and all they seem to
show is an exploded view and something bizarre about a knife to split the
case. I asked a friend of mine with access to a mechanic's billable time
manual and he told me that the vanagon r&r of the heater is 4 hrs for the gas
vanagon and 5 hrs for the diesel (why the 1 hr diff?) Still that's 300 bucks
at least just for the labor 100 bucks more for a new fan motor and right now
the van is teetering on the edge of a forced winter retirement. Because that
kind of disposable income I aint got 1 month before Xmas!
So does anyone have any reasonable suggestions for a slightly handy
enthusiast to get some hot air flowing (without making the easy, obvious
joke) in my van?
TIA
Keith Olsen
