Subject: Need a new starter for my diesel Vanagon
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Hi

I knew it would happen. This cold weather in Virginia is affecting my diesel Vanagon already. When I hit the starter key this morning, I heard a moan from the solenoid and the starter would not turn over. The second try did turn over but it took about 6 tries to get the diesel to fire up. I plan on replacing the glow plugs, battery, and starter just to be safe.

On checking the local auto parts places here in Woodstock Virginia, I got a range of $119 to $210 approximately for a new/rebuilt one. That has been a typical situation for me even while still in my old area near Davis, California. Prices for the same starter can vary widely. I picked up one there from Grand Auto in Davis for $89 for my diesel Rabbit. I would assume the starter for the Vanagon is the same as the Rabbit with basically the same engine.

Does anyone have a suggestion of where to find one reasonably priced?

Many thanks in advance!! This list has been very helpful and saved me many $$$ over the last year.

Jim Snyder
