That is the hard way to do it!

The easy way: Put the shifter in 2nd gear, pull up the rubber boot at the bottom of the shifter. Now you'll find two 10mm nuts. Loosen the two nuts, still in 2nd, pull the shifter to the left (towards the driver's seat) and let it rest. Tighten the two nuts and install the boot. I've done this with success in several diffferent VWs, both front and rear engined.
