Mike,

Total price is about right. Let's see about $1700 for engine and all extras and about $1500 for the kit. Add in a couple hundred for bolts, fabrications, etc. etc. It's about right.

Transaxle is AOK. I do horse it, too. I can't resist.

The VW engine is configured to allow some water to circulate back into the engine when the thermostat is closed. The Subaru (and most engines) does not circulate water when the thermostat is closed, the only water circulation is through the heater hoses. If you start up without circulating the heater water, then you will have hot spots until the thermostat opens on it's own.
