I finally finished installing my 6-gauge cluster in my TD Vanagon, and this weekend drove to western NC with a full load (4 people, 4 bikes, 1 dog and probably 5-600 lbs. of gear ). It was really a ton of fun to watch the needles move to and fro, but I have a few concerns: I have the boost cranked up to 11 PSI, and the injection pump is timed to spec, but I experienced exhaust temps on long hills of 16~1700 degrees F, usually around 1000~1100 on the flats (pre-turbo temp probe). Is this normal, or high? If high, what to try to reduce it? And can I safely go higher on the boost without an intercooler? Also of concern, oil temps were rising quite high on the long hills, pegging the gauge at 160 degrees C. Good thing I am using synthetic! That, however, will be remedied by the addition of the Mazda RX 7 oil cooler I recently acquired. It amazed me how well this little diesel could pull the huge load we had burdened it with, and still have a reserve to pass slow trucks on hills at 70 mph! I will post more on the gauge setup soon, hopefully on a webpage with pics, as I know some of you have expressed an interest in seeing it.
