The other option is to remove all the valves so the tank is open to ambient air. The guy who glass-blasted my tank insisted on this. I brought threaded "plugs" for the holes which he threaded in once he saw it was empty/open.

Generally, you can ship a propane container if it has been purged of propane and filled with an inert gas (usually nitrogen). You'll have to provide the receipt showing that it was purged and the shop that does it will place a tag on the tank stating that it was purged.

It costs a little more to get the nitrogen fill than the propane, but not all shops do it so call around.
