Last time I tightened up the spring the entire metal post pulled out of the mirror shaft! Not knowing that the list vendors had new mirrors for $20, I reinserted the pin and drilled through the mirror shaft and through the pin. Then I inserted a nail to pin the post in permanently and patched the hole with a little silicone sealer.

This is a permanent fix, and pretty easy, but a shiny new mirror is better.

If they are the same as our 1982, all youze has to do is remove them, tighten the nut under the base, and put them back on. Took me about 15 minutes to do both sides.
