Why is an AC on an air cooled motor a bad idea?

It comes down to one thing: the "margin of error" in cooling the air-cooled motor is far tighter than a liquid cooled motor. By putting an AC compressor on the list of things the motor has to spin with its meager 68 hp, you snatch about 6 hp, and push the temperature of the motor through the roof. Think of it this way...if you are fat and out of shape, you are probably just fine doing your daily chores, but if I put an 80 lb pack on your back, you might have a heart attack just puttering around the house. The air cooled motor is a little "out of shape" in the cooling department.

You can *help* the situation by using a Melling 150% oil pump that has been blueprinted, and running your oil through a couple big oil coolers. The problem with this solution is that while it can help dissipate some of the heat from the motor, where the problems generally crop up in an air cooled motor are not in the lower-end (bearings, rods, etc.) but in the heads/pistons. There are only limited means toward providing extra cooling for these, so an AC on an Air-cooled motor (generally) is a poor idea.

Hello from Atlanta. Or shall I say Hotlanta. At the risk of sounding rude, I want to know--WHO said "an air cooled should not have AC anyway"??? Have we ever driven to Miami or Atlanta in August? Help me with this...
