Subject: Speedometer troubleshooting

I have been troubleshooting a nonworking speedometer that occurred after I had the instrument cluster out.

I have done the following:

1. When I pulled the flexible shaft out of the upper housing and put it in the speedometer and twisted the shaft, the speedometer responded. I presume this means the speedometer is okay.

2. When I feed the shaft back down the housing and made sure that it had dropped into whatever hole is at the bottom, the shaft would not turn. Does this mean that I have gotten the shaft in the right position?

3. When I drove the van, the shaft was not turning. What does this mean?

What do I do next? How do you troubleshoot the device the connects the upper and lower cables?

Have I missed anything obvious?
