Yeah, I felt I had to solve this in a hurry or give up the van (which now, 2
years later, I must do anyway for other reasons).  I put 3 sheet metal screws in
the forward inside door post about 1/2" from the edge, one a few inches from the
top, one a few from the bottom, and one in the middle, then lined up
corresponding screws on the door, also a half-inch from the edge.

I didn't screw them in all the way, left the head sticking out about a
quarter-inch.  Then I took 3 links of chain just big enough to pop over the
heads and voila!  Catch chains so that when the door pops it won't fly open.

Later I squeezed the links in a vise so that they would stay on the door post
screws and slip more easily over the door screws.  We get along fine with just
the middle one.

Anyone wanna buy an '87 GL cheap?  All it really needs is a rebuilt tranny . . .
