Kirk, you can remove the switch without taking off the door panel.  Just tilt
the switch frame away from the door panel a little (allowing the top of the
frame to pop out of the hole).  Don't tilt it the other way as the bottom of
the frame has feet on it that will break off if you put too much strain on
them.  Now just pull the switch up and out of the hole until you come to the
plug.  Hold the plug end that attaches to the body wiring harness and unplug
the switch (don't let go of the plug as it may get sucked back into the door
and then you will have to remove the door panel).
Now the switch will pop out of the frame if you use a small screw driver to
depress the metal tabs on the top and bottom of the switch and push it
forward (away from the door panel) out of the frame.
Now you switch is out.  Check the part number on the back as there are two
different switches.  I have these switches new for $35.  I have heard of
folks trying to fix them but never heard of one actually being fixed and the
fix lasting more than a month or so.
