If a sleight burr has worn into them, a press may be required. Over 90% of them will come off with a large drift and hammer as Haynes suggests. Be sure to remove the retaining clip before pounding. Some will slip off with light tapping, others will need more persuasion. The press is slick for any of them and required for but a few. Use a big brass drift pin and a 5 pound hammer and start with modest raps, working up the force till it begins to move then progress by moving the drift around the perimeter of the hub between each strike. If you get to where you are striking with heavy force with a 5 lb. hammer and movement is only sleight or non existant, a press must needs be used. Then you can remove the burrs with a file before tapping on the new joint.
