Matt and polyester resin hold stuff together, but they don't bond worth a crap and you need strength where damage has occurred, not a resin-rich fiber-poor patch. Also grinding down into the the damage and having increasingly wider layers of repair material to fill the void helps spread the load over the damage area and helps to make the finishing layer look half way professional.
