The fan switches have a nasty habit of melting.  I've had three do it!  You
drive around for a year or two (or four) because you don't want to remove
the dash, then feel like a complete idiot when you finally figure out that
it was the darned switch all along.  The plastic part of the switch melts
and kinda bubbles up around the contacts so that the sweeper is lifted and
can't make a good contact.  You can test this by removing the switch (easy -
use a knife blade and pry it and its entire housing off) and jumping the
wires.  You should hear the back fan run.
