When I pulled the dizzy from the '74 thing I replaced the O-ring with the one supplied by "el-cheapo-Wisconsin-parts-supplier". The problem turned out to be that the O-ring was too damned thick. I then went to the only freindly VW Dealership Parts Guy in entire Chicago area, and he gave me the right O-ring for $2.50 (5 times what M----CO charged). The dizzy then popped right in and didn't leak oil around the shaft.

The moral of my story is: Don't stand up in canoes! - Oops wrong story - Don't waste time on cheap parts.
