Subject: 90 vanagon Cam and lifter issue
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Hi folks, my first mail to the list:

Problem: I had a shop redo the top end of my motor (didn't have time). They replaced the lifters, but of course not the cam (since only the top end was done). Anyway, after a couple of weeks, I got huge valve trian noise. Pulled the valve covers and found that the rocker arm adjusters for the exhaust valves on #2 and #4 were disintegrating (from slapping against the valve stem after becoming loose). Replaced and adjusted - two turns ala Bently. Two blocks later, same problem. So obviously I have got a bad cam lobe.

Questions: was it Kosher to replace the lifters, given that the cam was not being replaced (i.e. did the different hardnesses cause the lobe wear).

Any other causes of this that someone can identify -- I am not one of those people that blame the last person who touched it, but this one seems kind of weird. Never a problem with the valve train until it gets messed with, then two weeks later boom? thanks for any help.
