Ed:

You will never own a Diesel Vanagon if you subscribe to pro/con analyses.
 You must drive this beast.  Does it speak to you?  Do you feel a tingle as
you humbly motor down the road?  Are you willing to be your own mechanic?
 You must be willing to admit a passion that others cannot understand.

The vw diesel engine is a remarkable machine.  The Vanagon is a fun and
useful vehicle.  You will find many lovers of each, but fewer lovers of
both.  Check out Martin's site http://www.cs.rochester.edu/u/jag/vw/ .
 Even if you are considering the non-westfalia Vanagon, Martin's site is
very useful.  Also, the VW-diesel list is very helpful.  Go to
http://www.vwfans.com for subscription information.

If you decide to pass on this vehicle, post the relevant information to
both of these lists so that others may have a shot at it.
