Subject:      Power window woes
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Volks,

I've an 89 Westy GL (Marlin) who is a dream to drive. One day I will regale you all with stories of his heroics and valor. But not today.

Today I have two questions. Hence, I will write two emails. This is the first.

My power windows have ceased to function. In the morning they worked, in the afternoon they didn't. Then a few days later, they did again, but only for a short time.

I have traced the problem to a DPO fix from a previous problem. Opening the driver's side door, looking at the rubber boot which houses the wires for locks, windows, and mirror, I saw a slit. Fishing around in there (carefully), I found a splice. A broken splice. I attempted to reconnect it, but I had lost the end of the wire that goes into the car (as opposed to the one that goes into the door). I can feel it, but I can't get it to pull out enough to reconnect.

My guess is that, to fix it right, I'll have to take off the door and run a whole new wire from the window controller to the wiring harness. I called my friendly neighborhood VW guy and he said he'd be happy to do it for $90.

Q: Is this a hard fix to make?

Q2: Do I need any special wire to do it?

Q3: Do I need any special VW specific parts to replace all the door pieces (little clips, plastic seals etc)?

Q4: Do you think this broken connection would cause both driver's and passenger windows to fail?

Thanks in advance.

</tom>
