Cary, NC is the worst. Just last week, I watched from my VANAGON window as they crumpled an entire, complete 1930's house. Not an abandoned dump mind you. Recently occupied. EVERYTHING went to the landfill, including about 2,000 square feet of Maple T&G floor, Beautiful doors, windows, fixtures, baseboards, everything. Lots of stuf that could have been transported in my VANAGON. Nothing was stripped, no apparent attempt to advertise that it would be torn down (come pick and pull). DUH!

This, from a city that mandates "recycling", (it is against the law to throw certain things in the garbage). They are so stupid. Nuf said.

I just made the connection that the book was on an Atlanta trash pile! As a long time Atlanta intown resident and early morning runner, I can vouch for the plethora of goodies one can find on the middenheaps at the curbside on trash day. Many items are brand new from Home Depot--the homeowners are "too busy" to take them back for a refund! I suspect the $250,000.+ price of an average 1920's intown bungalow has a lot to do with the quality and quantity of curbside castoffs... I have three old style heavy Hunter ceiling fans that look great and work perfectly hanging in our home. These are curbside finds, together with the 20 feet of solid beech 1940's tongue and groove paneling in my office... Question for listees: Is this situation similar in your cities-affluent trash?

Regards, Mike Nichols, Intown Atlanta
