I just replaced the ignition switch on an '85 westy because the engine kept cutting out while I was driving. I bought it for $8 from Vanagain and it took me like 5 minutes to switch it. It was one of the easiest things I've ever fixed on the van. It fixed the problem right up too.

Apparently heavy keys, tugging on the steering wheel, old age, etc... can damage the switch (located on the side of the steering column). I tested to see whether or not the switch was the problem by playing with the keys while the car was on (moving them side to side/up&down) If I tweaked it just right I could get the car to start and stay running. Fiddling with that might "fix" or at least effect your lights.

In anycase, if you suspect the ignition switch, you'll only lose about $10 bucks and 10 minutes if you do it yourself.

Connal
