Anything is possible. I can't imagine why you would want to swap motors...

For starters, if you want t water cooled one, they made thousands of them...buy one of those. Keep in mind, there is a finite number of these vehicles left on the planet. Any "Frankenstein" thing you make would be in the crusher far sooner than a stock, whole, reliable Westfalia.

Secondly, the air-cooled power plant is a fantastic motor. In the 1982 model year, you are purchasing a motor that has been road-tested and improved for 15 years in basically identical vehicles (since the 1968 bus). If you change the oil, keep the cooling tin/fan/foam seal in good shape, and perhaps add an oil cooler, this motor can run for 200+k.

Sure, you can swap them out, by why?

I just bought my first Westie! It is an 82 in good mechanical shape. I am wondering if it is possible or for that matter even a good idea to try put a water-cooled engine in it?
