My 912 Porsche will idle cold, no chokes, at less than 300 rpm. This is due to precise adjustments certainly, but could not happen without precise balance. It runs so smooth it is scarry. A very large benefit of balancing is the elimination of extraneous harmonics which create and propogate cracks from stress risers. Balancing relates not only to rotating and reciprocating parts. It also shows benefits in matched combustion chamber volume, matched port flow and balanced assembly processes like, three or more torque stages when tightening the heads left to right to pull them in together without setting up case stresses from uneven strain, and massaging the case halves to balance bearing clearances, as a few examples of refined procedures.
