If we weren't talking about Vanagons, this response could be
considered a Friday joke.

70% chance it's an electrical fuel injection problem of which there are
about 27 likely causes.  Strongly recommend getting a Digitool from
Darrell Boehler.  I've been through about 8 of these causes and the Digitool
has transformed paranoia into serenity.
20% chance of fuel flow problems, about 10 likely causes, easier to
troubleshoot
5% chance of exhaust flow problem  about 3 likely causes, easier to
troubleshoot
5% something else, about 100 causes

Working with a dealer, you can easily roll through a LOT of money
shotgunning the problem.
