You should check the derivation of "hype".

For those of you elsewhere, things aren't really as interesting here in
Seattle as the media would lead you to believe.

I've been out walking around downtown every day and my temp apt is a block
from Pike.  Seems to me the main impact is that the grocery store closes
early and you have to listen to news copters until the wee hours.

The vibe is a lot more like a medium snow storm than Chicago or Seattle '68.
Things are different in some way-- work is out early, buses re-routed.  A
very few folks don't know how to handle themselves and do stupid things
which are televised.  The rest of us watch the stupidity on TV and talk to
each other about how long it took to get home from work or return a video.
It's a slight change, but nothing that rips your world apart or anything.

Folks really seem to have a need to be part of something significant.  This
wasn't.

Unfortunately, it seems like the current situation leans a little closer to
the German than the French.
