Silicon -  a basic element - gray in pure form, usually derived for industry
from the smelting of quartz and quartzite. Or in other terms, Silicon
Oxides.   Used in  hooter augmentation, oiless lubrication, and computer
chip constrruction.

East of Montgomery, Alabama there was a silicon producing plant. Electric
furnaces were were layered with alternating coke and quartz/quartzite
gravel, which is very plentiful in the region. The furnaces melted the
rocks, and the carbon in the coke combined with the oxygen atoms in the
quartz/quartzite and vented from the furnace as carbon dioxide, while the
pure silicon poured from the bottom of the furnace into molds to form
ingots.

The ingots were shipped to the industrial plants of the east and midwest and
made into various silicon based lubricants, silicon steel, silicon aluminum,
cosmetics, medical appliances, etc.

Probably more than anyone wants to know about it but there it is.
