Subject: 85 Rear Heater Questions

1985 Vanagon. Turned the rear heater fan on last night and was soon greated by the smell of antifreeze. Today I removed the covering from the rear heater and in the process found the insulation under the carpets soaked with antifreeze. When I look at the heat exchanger, the small radiator like thing, there is some corrision at the bottom. I ran the van until hot but could not find anyt leak. Turned the heat on and off with the switch under the seat. What I did find was, when I put sidewise pressure on the switch antifreeze squirts out from this housing.

Questions:

1. Any ideas what needs to be replaced. Bently manual has zip on this heater. Will I need a Rear Heater Core and Rear Heater Valve?

2. Should I eliminate the whole thing, kids would be cold, and just connect the in & out hose?

3. How can I get the antifreeze out of the cork like insulation under the carpets?

Any assistance would be appriciated.

thanks
