Subject: Vanagon and Gas Tank

Grettings and Happly Holidays!

I had to abandon the list for a while as the ex got the house and garage, and I had no place to work on my Vanagon, but I now have a garage, and the worst thing has happened.

I think I have a hole in the gas tank. :( Naturally, its 10 degrees outside and snow all over the place. I know that the fuel lines, especially the ones that go to the overflow resevoirs, are in bad shape, but as I look underneath, I see gas dripping from the tank, more towards the rear, and center of the tank, than the outside edges. The Van has 200K+ on it, so I am not surprised at the need for repairs, but why does it always happen in the winter??? :-)

RMM says $150 for a new tank. Is that a fair price? Should I even try to have the existing one repaired?

I went to vanagon.com to search the archives as I am sure this has been gone over many times on this list, but I could not find a place that seemed like the archives, other than and ftp site, and I don't know what files I would need.

Can I ask it one more time? How much fun is it to replace the fuel tank in an 81 vanagon? I also need directions to where it is written how much fuel line I will need to replace everything back to the engine, as I might as well while I am under there. What size is the line, and what size clamps? I am not very metrically inclined.

Much obliged for any assistance, or directions to the information elsewhere.

Stay warm!

Regards from Utah,

John
