If I were to do a 2 wheel drive engine swap, I would remove the engine and trans. from a front drive 3.8 buick, and make it fit in the rear of a Vanagon. I've looked in to this a bit, and the only major problem, I've found so far is the engine cover needs to be moved forward. PArts are cheap, anyone can work on it, plenty of power, MPG would be about the same as the buick It came out of. Doing this in the Syncro brings am entire new set of problems, that's why my SS (Summer Syncro) is getting an inline VW 4.
