Hello Listers, it's been a while.
Zippy has survived yet another year with its original (rebuilt) engine in
place, only to to start bleeding coolant at the first sign of cold weather.
Guess that means a new AVP engine is in my near future. Any recommendations
on good mechanics within a few hours of Washington DC would be much
appreciated. I'm looking for someone to swap engines and do whatever work
needs to be done to keep the van safe and healthy. Is there a 15 year
check-up/replacement recommendation posted anywhere in the archives? I'm
wondering about stuff that should be done (especially with the engine out)
that may not be obvious at first glance (fuel lines, brake lines, etc.)
Now for the tent. I picked one up this summer and, yes, it is the greatest
thing since sliced bread. It made camping for a family of four a breeze
(literally: sleeping with the side door open was great for hot nights.) It
made camping in the rain fun and easy. The problem is that it is a '72 and
just a bit too small for the vanagon. I m hoping to sell it to someone with
the proper vehicle and get a modern tent as a replacement.
The tent is a '72 driveaway, with floor. The condition is very good, but not
collectable. All original poles (one shows a weld repair) The canvas is in
good shape, no mildew or large holes. There are a few (maybe 10) small (1
inch or less) holes that the previous owner repaired neatly with iron-on
patches. THe floor has one, I think, small tear covered with duct tape. The
gasket is in excellent shape and held well on the gutter even during heavy
rain. There is a small amount of tearing at each end of the gasket (less
than an inch, pictures available). All the zippers work well and there are
no tears in the screens. The original bag is gone. Jpegs available for
serious buyers. This tent has been used, but not abused.
I am asking $500 for it, not including shipping. Yeah I know it's a lot, but
that's what I've got in it. If it does not sell by the spring, I will
consider lowering the price. I am located in the Washington DC area.
BTW, if any breadloaf driver out there has a modern tent that they want to
trade, I'm totally up for that.
Thanks for looking,
Peter & ZIppy
