Hi listies,

I've just taken possession of a 1990 European spec 1.6 Turbo Diesel Vanagon. Since a few days, it has developed a strange problem:

In the engine bay, next to the fuel filter, sits an electric pump which is supposed to switch on after you switch off the ignition, and which keeps the coolant flowing through the radiator system for a few minutes to disperse excess heat in the engine compartment. When temperature levels have cooled sufficiently, it should switch off.

Mine doesn't: it just keeps going.. I've temporarily corrected this by just unplugging its connector but this is hardly a scientific solution. Does anyone have any suggestions?

A few clues: the coolant temp meter in the dashboard works fine, so that sensor is ok. Same for the pre-start glow sensor: when the engine's cold, the glow light is on for longer than when the engine is warm. So those two temp sensors are ok. Is there a third one for this little pump?

(BTW: my old van, a 1984 unblown diesel, doesn't have this pump at all)

Regards and thanks for any input, Robin
