after replacing every mount, clutch component, the thing that fixed me up was the cross-shaft.

The place that did the work originally, which i went back to when the clutch was shuttering, installed a new clutch, and the cross-shaft (which they didn't do originally). The labor was on me, and the cross-shaft, and throw out bearing carrier !! I got a look at the tranny when it was out and there was a bit of a scrape visible on the cross-shaft.

Let's just say that this place (out of cambridge Ma, specializong in VW repair) won't see me anymore, and i did a ton of business with them.

I have the same problem in my '85 GL with Eurospec engine. Only shudders when cold. It's a Sachs clutch. New flywheel, disk, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing and tranny seal. Don't know if the clutch is German made. Brand new motor mounts also. I have noticed the clutch pedal returns slow on occasion. I've heard that the cross shaft bushings being worn might cause shuddering.
