In my TD conversion (1987 Syncro), I located a tach from a '85-'93(?) Jetta/Golf II, which slips right into the cluster where the original was. My understanding is that there is an internal difference in the tachs. The 'W' wire is the signal wire to the tach, just as the coil pulse wire was to the original tach. I also modified the faceplate from the diesel tach to accept the Vanagon's fuel and temp gauge, as the diesel tach only had a spot for one aux. gauge at the bottom. I used the bottom half of the gas tach face, and the upper half of the diesel face, sandwiched together. Looks almost factory, just a small line where the two meet.

As for the glow plug LED, I just plugged in one more (yellow, from an old Rabbit dsl. cluster) and a resistor (from same) which I attached to power up an unused LED circuit on the foil circuit board. Looks like it was born there. Let me know if you need further info.
