Boy, not sure which Thetford you have there, but that's not a problem on ours at all...

There is a little "green/red" gauge on the front of our Porta-potti. Green = plenty of room in here, bombs away; red = grit your teeth, you should have emptied me at the last rest area.

Also, there is no "vent" on ours. When the waste-entry gate is closed, (with a completely full tank or not) you can shake, tumble, and roll the container, and it doesn't spill a drop. There is a thumb-press operated vent on ours that you use only when dumping, to break the vacuum. Again, no chance of leakage, even when filled to the tippy-top.

Something that occurred to me about Thetford Porta-Pottis -- before you use one, open the flush gate and look inside to make sure the thing's not already full. Failure to observe this precaution can result in the toilet equivalent of a LOCA (nuclear reactor Loss Of Cooling Accident) because there's a little vent in the top of the sewage chamber that opens along with the flush gate.
