Your best bet is spend $30 on a compression test.

Unfortunately, there is no magic "oil into the cylinders" recirculating device. It is not out of the question that the PO didn't fill the cooling system correctly, and the rings/cylinders are toast, but it is also possible that NASA's Mars lander will start broadcasting today. It is possible that I am not writing this, but only dreaming it.

Find out the compression. Cheers,

I thought of the rings being gone, but all of them at once? It hasn't overheated in the 4000 miles since I've owned it. Is there a recirculation valve or something sticking that might be backing oil into the chambers? I know it's unlikely, but I'm trying to remain fairly positive...

Uh-oh, Joe .. If you are fouling plugs that quickly with oil, you may have more serious problems. Is there any possibility you may have overheated the van? Change coolant without burping? It sounds like maybe your rings are toasted.

Anybody else have less-expensive ideas about a cause?

Thank you all very much for your suggestions; so far I've pulled the plugs, cleaned them, fouled them again with what appears to be oil in about ten minutes (pulled and cleaned plugs twice for good measure.) It'll run very well for a few minutes then start idling roughly and finally dies. I changed the oil (and smelled plenty of gasoline in it) and the exhaust isn't nearly as thick, or doesn't seem to be, and the temp in Denver has been a fairly constant 25-40 degrees while I've been working on it. It seems like the combustion chambers are filling up with oil and/or gasoline and after a few minutes it fouls the plugs and that's what's killing it. Is there something similar to a PCV valve or EGR valve on it? My Bentley manual hasn't arrived yet and I'm finding very sparse emissions info in Haynes. I tried to push it home Monday night after getting it going and having it die, and was rocking it through a bump, when it went one way and I went another, so several strained muscles in my back have left me on the sidelines for a few days. On Friday I plan to try each idea I've been offered. Also if anybody can make it stop snowing here, it would be appreciated. Thanks all once again for the information and I appreciate your patience as i am completely new to this. I'll let you know how it turns out. Joe T. '85 GL 'bessie' Denver
