Tim; The coolant gauge is useless. The highest reading is 12 psi due to the pressure cap's limit. Instead look at the resevoir tank (the one on the left). If it is full then you did good on your new purchase. If it has any amount of air, that will not go away no matter how much you bleed it, then you have a problem. The other possibility is a matter of semantics. The "blown" head gasket may be refer to a more common Vanagon problem "The head seal leak". This is a coolant leak around the heads.
