I don't think you'll beat the diesel for reliability. If you take care a diesel properly it will EASILY outlast a gas engine. I know of a few 1.6l diesels with over 300k miles on them - without a rebuild. Try that in a gas engine. Diesel tune-up? All you do is adjust the injector pump if it's out of spec for timing. That's it. I'd like to find a 5 cyl audi TD motor to put into my quattro! Screw gas. Especially when it costs 10 cents/litre more here.
