I recently saw something interesting at my local pet store. It was a harness for the dog that allowed it to be attached to the shoulder harness strap of the automobile. The picture on the box showed a dog sitting in the front seat of a car attached as described. I do not have any experience with this device, but HK's post reminded me to check it out. I have traveled extensively with dogs in various vans from type 2s to 30 foot Winnebagos for the last 22 years. My 2 previous Golden Retrievers were trained to ride in specific areas of the vehicles for maximum safety. My new puppy still needs to be trained, so this device should help until then. If I were to build a platform for my front passenger seat, I would retain the complete seat intact so I could utilize this dog harness and I would install about 6 inches of dense foam about dash high so that my dog would hit that instead of the dash in the unfortunate event of an accident. Hope this helps. Travel safe.

Happy Trails,
