Putting cardboard in to block the radiator cooling, | IMHO, made no difference on the vanagon. Putting a winter front on my Westfalia helps with interior heat (especially at -20C and below) keeping in mind that the thermostat is working properly too.

The designers of the Vanagon had no idea how to design a vehicle for frigid weather which is why the machines squeal like a stuck pig when started in sub-arctic type temperatures.
