Subject: Coolant leak
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

While under the van yesterday foolin' with tie rods and rust (see previous post) I see some coolant leaking from the rear. So crawl back there to have a look see and hoping to find anything but head leaks. Turns out to be the plastic thermostat housing has a hole in it. Seems to have just disintegrated ! Looked like a real mess to get outta there and probably an expensive dealer only part, so I decide to drain the coolant, clean up the affected area and do the "5 minute epoxy repair trick". So far holding up, BUT for how long ????? AND, if that one area of the housing is deteriorating, what's the rest of it like and how soon will it disappear ??? Guess I'd better start looking for a replacement ! Anybody dealt with this before ? Is this a dealer only piece ? Another fine example of VW engineering !

Cheers & Happy Holidays
