Bob Donalds made a reference in his post on vanagon air scoops that mentioned the fact that cooler air made for more power and efficiency. Thust it is desiable to get cooler air down the intake pipes. As I understand it, the nitrogen injection that is done on hopped up engines drops the temperature of the fuel/air mixture so severely that the charge actually shrinks significantly therefore you can actually get MORE fuel air into the combustion chamber before ignition, thereby increasing power significantly.
