Actually they didn't! My 87 runs on 185R14, just as any other 87 2wd. In
the competitive US market, the wider tires were put on to give the car
better handling, especially after the Suzuki Samurai deal, where it
flipped over. Mercedes copied that feat a couple of years ago, in the
Moose-test done by Swedish journalists.
