I believe "Golf" came from VW's trend to use names of winds. Golf= Gulf
(stream?), Quantum and Scirocco were also from the wind era.

The most stupid name of all IMHO was the Renault Le Car.
The Toyota names originally all began with 'C' - Corona, Corolla,
Carina, Crown, Cressida, Camry. I think the Starlet was the first
non-'C' Toyota name.
