Subject: Rust in seams: 1987: Info on sealant and paint wanted
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Hey all,

The seam rust is not all the way through, its caught in time (will last till 60 degree weather in spring) but I would like to plan ahead :-).

Any requisite sealant. paint, technique to use?

My plan was to use my 3/8 drill, put on a metal sanding wheel (3M), and have at it. Once bare metal then prime with a zinc based primer. Then it gets a little funky, theres no bread to paint the whole van and matching colors using factory paint will never look right with all of the sanding spots that will be done (I am looking into getting a custom batch mixed up as per the list prior).. So, its art time, have to figure out a cool pattern to lay down.

There is an option to make a 6" wide swath on the bottom, paint that black with paint or rubber based rust proofing compound. I'm thinking paint to start (resale value) and an asphaltum coat when it fades (this baby ain't going anywhere!!).

Top coat something creative, flowers, symbols, etc to blend in the vertical seams. Its just such a big canvas, that it boggles the imagination with possibilities.

I don't own a sprayer, although I am tempted to get a small art one (be great if there was water based paint suitable for use, easy cleanup, minimal fumes), so its spray can city for the job. Duplicolor any good? Maybe something at Eastmans Automotive (sp)?

I saw someone else request info on a similar theme, appreciate forward of relevant info (bandwidth limiting comments not needed unless you feel the need to, its the internet after all <big grin>)

Any ways, its been a long hiatus from busland and I'm starting it over again on the water side this time(camping with my boys locally in MA/NH). Remember. its meant to be a fun wagon and as we get older we just naturally begin to look funnier.

Thanks for listening,

Have a happy and healthy new year!!
