a trick i learned as a wee lad: when putting on any new oil filter, take some new fresh oil and smear it on the filter's rubber gasket all around. that'll keep it from bunching up as you tighten the filter onto the engine. :)

it also helps to fill up the filter BEFORE you put it onto the bus. this supplies the engine with oil for those few seconds during cranking, as opposed to no oil being there for the engine to suck out of the filter. only trouble is ... on the aircooled buses, this works fine; the filter is straight up and down. but on the watercooled buses, the filter is tilted, so you can't fill up the filter all the way to the top ... stop about 3/4 way up inside the filter. otherwise, the oil will spill out as you twirl the filter onto the engine.
