Hey -

Although I'm sure you're aware that hydraulic lifters can take up to a half hour of normal running to pump up, you don't want the things rattling around like that indefinitely- there's a potential for damage to lifters, pushrods, rockers and valve stems.

I would start by adjusting 'em in a half turn at a time, checking compression after each adjustment. Max turn-in is 2 full turns - of course - but if you start to lose compression, back off to the previous half-turn mark. My feeling (and experience) is that if the valves can close all the way every time at all speeds and the valve train is quiet the engine will run well and no damage will be done. We have also experienced the no-compression-with-proper-adjustment phenomenon, occasionally, only (so far) with waterboxers and the above procedure has been our remedy.

All, OK, I did it... Finally. Last night (I did my heads a couple of weeks ago) I adjusted my valves to 6 mils of lash. My poor wasserboxxer sounds like a coffee can, full of ball-bearings, rolling down a hill. There was one adjuster turned all the way in! I wish I saw that when I put the rocker assembly back on. My idle is a little screwy now. It is up at about 1600 RPM. I am going to adjust the valves today (now that my lifters are "all pumped up"!)when I get home. Will my idle be OK after that, (I hope)? It was fine before I did the adjustment last night. It doesn't make much sense to me. Thanks for your reply.
