Here's a web site that sells a gadget that looks like it would make chain installation much easier.

I've made my own "chain ramps" for years. Just take a 2x6 and nail or screw two or three cross-pieces, made from 3/4 inch plywood, to it at the proper spacing for your chains. Check out the illustration on the web site (above) to see how this works. If you make two of these things you can do both wheels at once but I've never bothered. It's easier to store just one and not a problem to do each wheel by itself.

Some other things that make for easier chain installation are warm clothing, a good pair of waterproof gloves, a warm cap, and something to kneel on in the (sometimes wet) snow and wind.

Don't forget to put on the big rubber bands (chain tighteners).
